Even with our mild winters, Dallas residents feel just as excited as the rest of the country when spring is finally at our doorstep. This year, the city has plenty in store to celebrate the return of warmer temperatures. Stop by one of these events over the next couple of months to take advantage of the new season.
For an outdoor cultural activity the whole family is sure to enjoy, check out the Festival of Joy in Klyde Warren Park on March 30. Also known as the Festival of Chariots or Ratha Yatra, the Festival of Joy is one of India’s most ancient celebrations and is held in major cities around the world. This year’s event will explore India’s cultural and spiritual heritage with live music and dance performances, traditional food and games and fun activities for children, like Indian-themed face painting and arts and crafts. Adults can explore a special meditation zone, perfect for chilling out, with classes available on yoga and Ayurvedic health. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is free to the public.
Next up is a spring classic: Dallas Blooms at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Recognized as one of the largest floral festivals in the Southwest, Dallas Blooms is exactly what it sounds like — an ode to colorful, delightful spring-blooming bulbs. You’ll spot more than 100 varieties, including 500,000 tulips and hundreds of thousands of wildflowers. This year’s centerpiece will be a larger-than-life picnic scene topiary, complete with picnic blanket, picnic basket with pie, a vase of flowers and even a giant ant. The festival lasts six weeks (Feb. 23 – April 7) and includes film screenings, live music and entertainment, wine and beer pairings and plenty of programming for children. Admission prices start at $12.
Turtle Creek will also host its annual Spring Arts and Crafts Festival, presented by the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces. Held in Reverchon Park from April 13-14, this event features more than 100 local and regional painters, photographers, sculptors, leather and metalworkers, glass blowers, jewelers and crafters for a truly diversified artistic experience. There will be plenty of activities for families to enjoy, including artist demonstrations, live acoustic music, local food trucks and a play area for children. Four-legged family members are also welcome. This event is free to the public.
And would it really be spring without making a trip to the Dallas Farmers Market to check out the in-season produce? This year, we suggest stopping by in late April so you can also take advantage of the fifth annual Taco Libre Dallas, held at the Dallas Farmers Market Shed on April 27 from 3-10 p.m. Featuring 27 of the best taquerias from around the region, this foodie-focused event will make your taste buds rejoice. Each taqueria will provide a $2 taco for tasting while you enjoy live music — expect a Selena tribute band this year — and lucha libre wrestling matches. The event sells out each year, so make sure to buy tickets soon if you’re interested. All ages are welcome, and prices start at $10 for kids and $17 for adults; children under five are free.
